    late 17th century; earliest use found in Isaac Barrow (1630–1677), mathematician and theologian. From classical Latin recumbere to lie down, recline from re- + -cumbere to lay oneself (only attested in compounds). Compare Middle French recomber (intransitive) to extend, (reflexive) to rely or depend (on someone)
