    late 19th century; earliest use found in William Jevons (1835–1882), economist and philosopher of science. From Hellenistic Greek πήδησις leaping, already in ancient Greek in sense ‘beating, throbbing’ of the heart from ancient Greek πηδᾶν to leap, beat, throb + ancient Greek -σις
