1940s; earliest use found in Pacific Affairs. From Russian nganasan (plural nganasany) from Nganasan ŋanasa (plural ŋanasanʔ), lit. ‘person, human being’. The self-designation of the Nganasan is Nya (also as n'aa, adjectival form of n'a mate); all of these forms have analogues in Nenets
