    mid 19th century; earliest use found in Prideaux John Selby (1788–1867), naturalist. From scientific Latin Neophron, genus name from Hellenistic Greek Νεόϕρων, the name of a man transformed into a vulture in the Metamorphoses of Antoninus Liberalis (probably 2nd cent. a.d.), use as name of ancient Greek νεόϕρων childish in spirit from νεο- + ϕρήν mind
